Friday Morning
Jonas
Before Elizabeth woke up, Iâd already gone for a run with Daisy, enjoyed my good coffee, and checked my email. The latter was part of my morning routine. Despite the comfort from the habitual process, it still felt different from the days when coworkers urgently requested my input on a project. These days, email consisted of newsletters, e-bills, and spam.
It was mid-morning by the time Elizabeth was ready to go and weâd told Mary what we learned last night about Bianca and Duncan. We were all getting worried about our lack of progress in solving the murder but had no better ideas, so we drove out to Mimiâs house.
Before sorting through the final items, Mary spent a few minutes outside looking around and calling for Lucy to no avail.
Elizabeth flitted from one room to the next, haphazard with her sorting and selecting. I followed behind to pack all the items she wanted to save in a box. That was as efficient a system as I could manage given her lack of process today.
âOkay. Ready with another box yet?â I asked as I walked back into the attic after having loaded a full box into the car.
She turned, her phone to her ear. âGreat, see you soon,â she said, and hung up.
âThat was Kelsey. Sheâs got an open period at school today so weâre going out to lunch,â she said happily, and started dusting herself off.
âI could eat,â I said.
âYou can always eat,â she said with a chuckle. âBut this lunch date is just for me and Kelsey. She wants to distract me from worrying about my arrest.â
âOh,â I said as I tried to remember if there was anything I could eat here.
She laughed. âDonât be so sad. You donât have to stay here. Do you want me to drop you off at Momâs house?â
âSounds good.â I grabbed her into a tight squeeze. âBut Iâll go with you to the restaurant and find something to eat somewhere else. I can walk around town and check out all the sights.â
Elizabeth snorted. âAll the sights? Youâve seen all the sights. Itâs Jenkins.â
I shrugged. The lake was quite pretty with all the trees starting to fill in and I hadnât walked along the other side of Main Street. Iâd be fine.
After winding our way down the mountain and across the river into town, Elizabeth parked outside the restaurant. She gave me a quick kiss, and as I strolled off, she called, âEnjoy the sights.â
Now that she had mentioned lunch, I was hungry, so the sights would have to wait. I passed a fast-food place and a local joint whose only vegetable option appeared to be the sad tomatoes served on top of their burgers. I kept going.
When I reached the grocery store, Colton and Billy Ray were sitting out front again. I remembered they had a nice salad bar inside that far exceeded the other options Iâd encountered so far.
From the bench, Colton asked, âYou going to get something to eat in there?â
I nodded.
